Where’s Patrick these days? Happily geeking out at New Relic

Posted on December 10, 2010. Filed under: Gigs |

I’ve been meaning to get this post out, but life gets in the way.  I’m excited to share I’ve joined New Relic as Vice President of Marketing. As the title suggests, I’m responsible for all things marketing — supporting sales and Biz Dev — as well as ensuring the self-service business thrives and grows.

New Relic? Isn’t that the company does all that really brainy app analytics and production performance stuff in San Francisco? Isn’t that more technical than what you’re used to, Patrick?”

Yes, and No. I was introduced to the New Relic team originally this summer. Lew Cirne is the founder (New Relic is an anagram of his name) – and I was immediately impressed and enamored with their mission and culture. I was especially intrigued when he and Mark Sachleben (COO) told me they explicitly wanted someone with SaaS experience who was NOT from the traditional APM (Application Performance Management) community because they wanted to intentionally DISRUPT the market and didn’t want someone with legacy industry experience. Even though I had spent some time at Cisco after the WebEx acquisition, I wasn’t that into enterprise IT marketing and selling. Once again, that just drew Lew, Mark and I closer together.

New Relic is a great company, doing big things, fast. And the business model is right up my alley. The financial backing is a who’s who of the valley. The marketing and sales funnel is a SaaS guy’s dream – Solid traffic coming organically because of a killer disruptive product, 6,000 customers with more each day, a hybrid-freemium offering, a sales team and sales leader who “gets” the volume game, and a partner ecosystem that is huge and working! A TRULY top notch marketing team in place already didn’t hurt either.

Here’s why I have joined:

  • Culture: New Relic is a culture of super smart people, that care deeply about each other and our customers. Most important, they built a rockstar product that people love. Great work-life balance as well.
  • Growth: New Relic is growing fast – and has an escape velocity trajectory (buzz word alert!) that is up, up, up… and to the right! Add to that a roadmap and vision from Lew and Jim (Jim Gochee – SVP, Product) that could change the way web apps are built and managed forever.
  • Impact: New Relic is full of enterprise software expatriates. Smart, yes. Been through a few SaaS models, no. I can help guide them and optimize the business around the funnel to accelerate the biz even faster.
  • Focus: New Relic knows its success comes from the developer community it participates in.  And it knows the enterprise software model is changing.

Its been weird to not be talking about business collaboration– I’ve been in that space for the last 10 years. Its also refreshing and invigorating. I am embracing my inner geek and learning a ton every day. Having worked closely with Ritesh (CTO) , Christian and the product team at Fuze Box for the last 2 years as they built out their tech platform, my brain is trained to be empathetic and aware of the needs of the developer – as they are defining the future of our software industry. I’m proud to be joining a company that is facilitating this sea-change.

Its going to be a fun ride, and I look forward to simplifying and amplifying our message to the market!  If you build web apps and want to join high performance sites like 37Signals, Groupon, Atlassian, Github, AT&T and THOUSANDS of other customers – then sign up today!
